September 19. 10 years ago today, Rich Mullins passed away in an automobile accident. In my mind, the greatest Christian songwriter, period. Not much I can say about him, I'd rather let him speak.
It's just that for so many people that I know, Christianity's this matter of ... it has everything to do with morals. Christianity is a religion about morals. And they will even talk about Jesus. And they will say kids need to know about Jesus so they won't smoke, drink, or dance, or go with girls that do, and all that kind of thing. And I kinda go, 'That's not why people need to know about Jesus. The only reason—the only possible excuse for talking about Jesus is because we need a Savior.'
I think if we were given the Scriptures, it was not so that we could prove that we were right about everything. If we were given the Scriptures, it was to humble us into realizing that God is right, and the rest of us are just guessing.
Christianity is not about building an absolutely secure little niche in the world where you can live with your perfect little wife and your perfect little children in your beautiful little house where you have no gays or minority groups anywhere near you. Christianity is about learning to love like Jesus loved and Jesus loved the poor and Jesus loved the broken.
Bear in mind, children, that they listen to you because you are kids—not because you are right. That's how our Father listens to us.
If you've ever known the love of God, you know it's nothing but reckless and it's nothing but raging. Sometimes it hurts to be loved, and if it doesn't hurt it's probably not love, may be infatuation. I think a lot of American people are infatuated with God, but we don't really love Him, and they don't really let Him love them. Being loved by God is one of the most painful things in the world, it's also the only thing that can bring us salvation and it's like everything else that is really wonderful, there's a little bit of pain in it, little bit of hurt.
John Rivers, on meeting Rich Mullins: Who can forget, maybe at that same big convention, at that gigantic dinner we used to have after the Dove Awards. They had every unimaginable food and everyone was dressed to the nines and Rich Mullins was there and he felt so uncomfortable in that rich setting so to speak. I'm going along the dessert line and I see, I think, a guy who is Rich Mullins, who has relieved one of the servers and has now donned their white jacket and their little white chefs hat or whatever it was and is serving desserts to all these people after the Dove awards. I think most of them didn't even know it was him. But that was Rich Mullins. He'd rather be behind the counter serving than out with the folks in their fancy duds. Rich Mullins was the real thing. Rich Mullins loved Jesus.

The Bible is not a book for the faint of heart. It is a book full of all the greed and glory and violence and tenderness and sex and betrayal that benefits mankind. It is not the collection of pretty little anecdotes mouthed by pious little church mice. It does not so much nibble at our shoe as it cuts to the heart and splits the marrow from bone to bone. It does not give us answers fitted to our smaller minded questions but truth that goes beyond what we even know to ask.

Those people who did the greatest things for God were the people who weren't trying to do anything at all. They were just simply being obedient.
Those are the people God can use. And I want to be one of them. If God should use me, that would be great but if He doesn't there is a very interesting thing you can do. In the gospel of Mark or in any of the four gospels, you go through the gospels and you say, what people are absolutely essential to this story? So Mary is essential to the story because Mary had to give birth to Jesus. And you could say, well someone else could have. But lets say that if she wouldn't have done it then the story wouldn't have happened. So, you have God who chose to become flesh, you have Mary who gave Him flesh, you have Jesus who was God in the flesh or who was the child of Mary and God, you have Pontius Pilate who had, in an artificial sense, the power to kill Christ, you have Judas Iscariot who betrayed Christ and handed him over to the bad guys, you have whoever it was that nailed Him up to the cross. Out of those people that God used to accomplish His will in the gospel, only a couple of them were very nice people. Most of them were bad people. We all want to be useful to God. Well, its no big deal. God can use anybody. God used Nebuchadnezzar. God used Judas Iscariot. Its not a big deal to be used by God and the shocking thing in the book of Mark, and the reason why it is so shocking is because Mark is the briefest of all the gospels but he has these terrific little details and one of the little details is that it says, "and Jesus called to Him those that He wanted." And you realize that out of the twelve people that He wanted, only one was essential to His goal in coming to earth. The other eleven people were useless to Christ but they were wanted by Christ. And I kind of go, I would much rather have God want me than have God use me.

omg wknd
what pwn4ge wknd, it was so bloody relaxing. zero studying, zero work, zero productivity. a lot of splounging on the dock drinking. no better way to spend your wknd!
on another note, i have a small hole in my back after sunday's sball game, whee! other than that its time to get back to studying.. alright!

obligatory update
well, i finally drank the koolaid. and it really isnt all that sweet. after signing up i had to ask shar and james many times, 'so what do i do now?' - seriously, i dont see what the fuss is all about. i guess its nice to find old friends and see where people are at or what they're up to. or maybe its just a way to remind you that you can never get away from your past. oooh, spooky!
congrats to misa/keith on their new baby girl, and to jon/dawn on their engagement. some of my favourite uni memories are with jon and the et crew in first year, everything from hanging out watching movies to sunday afternoon lunches to the legendary potato gun. gg, congrats buddy.
just got back from spidey3. while i hesitate to say it sucked, it was definitely in line with s1 and s2 in terms of the cheese and pure awkward factor. among the highlights (no major spoilers):
- the audience cracking up at the most random times (unintentional comedy)
- the old guy telling harry he loved his dad, just like he loved harry (major laughs on that one, reminded me of chuck saying leo loves dick)
- mj singing way too much (so bloody awkward)
- tobey maguire's weird faces.. i cant tell if hes crying/smiling/grimacing/pensive, just like i cant decide if he's ugly or not
the hilariousness of it all was that people lined up to see this movie - make that, I lined up to see this movie. you'd think that an hour early was a little crazy, but when we got there a lengthy line had already formed. cmon, really? its not like this is star wars or lotr.. spidey 3, really? i half-expected to see some spidey costumes, but unfortunately we werent treated to any tonight. overall, even though it was a pretty crummy script i'd still say go watch it, if only cuz I have it in my movie pool bahahha.

quick hits
5. raptors. oh the frust. went to game 1, it was an awesome game, the energy level was insane, everyone was so into it. hilights include yelling at jack leo and the swirsk, as well as skipping the lame tailgate party bahahah. games 3 and 4 (tonight), however, have been an absolute disaster. no intensity, no hustle, its a struggle to watch, just so ugly.. oh well i'll be at game 5 cheering em on, one at a time right!
4. the last five years. went to a benefit concert last week where some of the songs from this musical were played, pretty good stuff. the musical seems interesting, story of a broken marriage told from 2 different povs, the guy starts from beginning to end while the girl tells it from end to beginning - the only scene they meet on stage is the wedding scene in the middle.
3. summer. its here! played ball (finally), omg so rusty, its awesome. cant wait for the weather to stay consistently warm, too bad i need to stay inside to study grrr.
