FU

congrats are in store to our dear friends clinton and evelyn, who are officially engaged to be wed. my first time meeting clinton was at lccf, all i remember was that he was the guy who wore a lot of black. and i mean a lot. i thought the goth look was a high school stage but i guess not. if you know clinton, you know the clinton look. the look where you know his mind is in overdrive but he has a rather stoic look on his face. that, i quickly learned, is also his poker face. as for evelyn, she was in my first year bu111 class with jim - my first memory of her is the girl who would sit in the front of the class (keener, anyone?) every lecture. i always sat in the back, and on the few occasions i sat up front with her, wouldnt you know i fell asleep. thanks a lot edot. regardless, good on the both of you, cheers.

the trip to NJ was pretty good, some awkward moments, a lot of good food, and the training was decent, no major complaints. good to get home, but it also means i need to get back to the books, which i didnt touch at all during the week. guess its time to take things seriously again, ugh. see ya.

yawn

past little while has been tiring. studied a lot for my first exam, but really it wasnt even enough. so now gotta work that much more to catch up and make sure i put myself in a good position to pass.. especially since its pretty much a sure thing that i bombed that first one.

work has been busy, it used to be i couldnt wait til 5pm rolled around, but these days it'll pass by and i wont even notice, its almost like there arent enough hours in the day to get everything done. like take yesterday (friday), the snow storm knocked out our power so we all went home early, i only got like 2.5 hrs of work in - normally i'd be estatic about leaving early but all i could think of was how much work needed to be done. so much in fact, i came home and tried to log on remotely but our internet was knocked out too. just a different mindset now i guess.

flying out to new jersey on monday for work training on a new planning model we're implementing. should be... boring.

anyways tonight we played ball again, i really think all the banging down low (read: fouling) has started to take its toll on my knees, i dont think i've ever been so fragile.

thats it for now, later kids

Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in Marathons. Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars - all in the same day.

Dick's also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. On a bike. Makes taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?

And what has Rick done for his father? Not much - except save his life.
This love story began in Winchester , Mass. , 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

"He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life;" Dick says doctors told him and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. "Put him in an Institution."

But the Hoyts weren't buying it. They noticed the way Rick's eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the Engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was anything to help the boy communicate. "No way," Dick says he was told. "There's nothing going on in his brain."

"Tell him a joke," Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a lot was going on in his brain. Rigged up with a computer that allowed him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? "Go Bruins!" And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, "Dad, I want to do that."

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described "porker" who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. "Then it was me who was handicapped," Dick says. "I was sore for two weeks."

That day changed Rick's life. "Dad," he typed, "when we were running, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!"

And that sentence changed Dick's life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

"No way," Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren't quite a single runner, and they weren't quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then they found a way to get into the race officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, "Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?"

How's a guy who never learned to swim and hadn't ridden a bike since he was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick Tried.

Now they've done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii. It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don't you think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you'd do on your own? "No way," he says. Dick does it purely for "the awesome feeling" he gets seeing Rick with a cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992 - only 35 minutes off the world record, which, in case you don't keep track of these things, happens to be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the time.

"No question about it," Rick types. "My dad is the Father of the Century."

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries was 95% clogged. "If you hadn't been in such great shape," one doctor told him, "you probably would've died 15 years ago." So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other's life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass., always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father's Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy.

"The thing I'd most like," Rick types, "is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once."

In love's service only the wounded soldier can serve.

The American playwright Thornton Wilder wrote a magnificent short play, The Angel That Troubled the Waters. Do you know the story? It's poignant and powerful. It involves the pool at Bethesda, the famous pool in Jerusalem where the people believed that a movement of the surface of the water was caused by an angel. The pool was surrounded by the ill and disabled who, as soon as they saw the waters being stirred, would quickly enter the pool, as they believed that the first person to enter the moving water would be healed.

In Wilder's play, there was a physician who would go to the pool with some regularity, wishing to be healed of his afflictions of melancholy and remorse. One day as he sat at the edge of the pool waiting and the waters began to stir, the angel appeared and stopped him from getting in. "Healing is not for you," the angel told him.

The physician was very upset. Why could he not receive this precious gift?

The angel responded, "Your melancholy and remorse, and the timbre in your voice when you speak to the broken and wretched, speak volumes and have a healing effect on them. Healing is not for you."

Still, the physician was troubled. But then a man who had been healed and was rejoicing came over, and said, "Would you come home with me just for one hour? My son is thinking dark thoughts. I can't communicate with him. You are the only person who has ever been able to lift his spirits. And since her child died, my daughter sits in the shadow. She won't listen to us, but she does listen to you. Please come home with me."

The angel, standing nearby listening, said, "In love's service only the wounded soldier can serve. All the angels themselves do not have the power to heal as you do."

Tribute to a Van

I remember...

...the moment we first met, the way your face shone in the sun
...how we used to cruise around town, so carefree and without worry
...you were always there to see me off to school every morning, and there to pick me up when school was over
...every early morning, you were there with me, no matter the hour
...all those late parties, how like a true friend you would be waiting patiently outside to drag me home
...you were there with me through high school, and you watched me go off to university, and I knew, at that moment, you were proud of me
...you were never judgemental of my friends or who I brought over, it didnt matter who they were, you were always willing to hang out together
...it never mattered what I wore, or what type of baggage I had in my life, you were always there accepting me
...those songs you would sing to me, how beautiful.. and what variety!

But I also remember the hard times...

...when you had that problem, and you were out of control and just couldnt stop, and the doctors took care of you and fixed you back up
...when we got into a fight in that parking garage, and I slammed you into the parking pillar

Alas, I knew our days were numbered. It was as if you had some kind of internal clock, counting each and every moment that passed by.

You have been there in all seasons, like a true friend. One thing I've always admired about you is how you were always so determined, so focused, so... driven.

And so it is, that I say goodbye to you, old friend. You will be much happier in your new home, where they will be able to give you much more attention than I ever gave you. Though the language and surroundings may seem foreign to you, I'm sure you will be fine.

I will leave you with this, which says more than I could ever say...

goodbye, my lover
goodbye, my friend
you have been the one
you have been the one for me

question: what is something you've always wanted to know about your church but never asked?

Thursday, November 30, 2006

you ever have one of those moments where you stop and think, man what am i doing with my life? and you realize how old you are time is slipping away and how you're still really the same person you were years ago, and you decide its time to start growing up, to take life seriously, no more clowning around. and then you think about it some more and you realize that life is too short to be taken seriously, its probably better to enjoy what you're doing and to find things that make you happy. and then you think some more and realize thinking is too hard, and maybe its better to not think so much in the first place.

2 things ive realized:
1. knowledge is power
2. ignorance is bliss

how does all THAT work.
